Fact-check: Police Commissioner Yuyi Mwala has not resigned

Mwala has been transferred to a new position as the Luapula Province Commanding Officer.

This claim circulating on Facebook alleging that Zambian Police Commissioner Yuyi Mwala has resigned is false.

The speculations surrounding Yuyi Mwala’s resignation began circulating amid a period of significant reforms within Zambia’s police force. Notably, as a high-ranking official, Mwala’s movements are likely closely watched, making any shift in his position a topic of public interest.

In reality, the Inspector General of Police, Graphel Musamba, authorised a series of personnel changes as part of routine administrative procedures, among them Mwala’s transfer to the role of Luapula Province Commanding Officer.

According to the Daily Nation Zambia, Mwala is among 48 senior police officers moved to different positions and capacities across the country.

The transfers were also reportedly a  strategic move as ‘part of a broader plan to optimise leadership and expertise within the force, ensuring that each officer is placed in a position where they can best utilise their skills for the benefit of the nation.’

To further confirm the accuracy of this information, a call was made to Rae Hamonga, the Public Relations Officer for the Zambia Police. Hamonga verified that Yuyi Mwala has indeed been transferred to Luapula Province and has not resigned from the police force, further dispelling any misconceptions about Mwala’s current status.

Fact-checking such claims about high-ranking officials like Police Commissioner Yuyi Mwala ensures that accurate information is disseminated helps prevent unnecessary confusion and speculation.
